Piriformis syndrome is caused by contact and compression of the sciatic nerve or its branches as they transit the infrapiriformis foramen. Physiotherapy, sectioning a tight iliotibial band, piriformis myotomy and fascial band releases have all been advocated as effective modes of therapy.
