Language of Infants

The infant is a social, emotional and communicative being from birth. By 4 months this communicative capacity is flowering. Recent research shows that mother-infant face to face interaction patterns at 4 months predict infant secure and insecure attachment patterns at 1 year. This half hour talk shows film and frame-by-frame analyses illustrating secure and insecure patterns at 4 months. You will see that, when the infant becomes a bit surprised and then distressed, the mother empathizes, joining the infant with her own “Oh, I’m sorry” face. After two such maternal and empathic joinings, the infant settles and returns to smiles and play.
